Midland-Odessa encompases the City of Midland and the City of Odessa but is known as the combination of both city names. This has led to not a little competition between the two cities especially in high school football. Texas high school football is a very serious matter in Texas and is hard fought and well financed. The population of the combined area is about 250,000 and Lubbock economy is primarily based in the petroleum industry. Lubbock is centered in the Permian Basin, which is the source of the New York Mercantile Exchange’s benchmark for Texas Intermediate Crude.
